Get your peanuts! Get your popcorn! More baseball excitement was in the air earlier this week in Myrtle Beach and at The Caravelle as the best of the Carolina League squared off against the best of the California League in a single A minor league baseball all star game at BB&T Coastal Field, the home park of our own Myrtle Beach Pelicans, affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The Caravelle was selected as the host resort of the event, and we were honored to play host to baseball's stars of tomorrow, as well as many of the coaches, staff and investors of our home town Pelicans. There was quite a buzz started when it was discovered that one investor of the ownership group in particular was here with us - NFL great and Heisman Trophy winner, Eddie George. The game was played this past Tuesday, and the Carolina League All Stars came out victorious with a 3-1 victory, that was highlighted by a late RBI single by Pelicans shortstop Brandon Hicks. Most importantly, the Pelicans management and staff put on a jaw dropping, action packed event that amazed all of the fans and baseball officials in attendance. With a BB&T Coastal Field record crowd of over 6500 fans in attendance, entertainment ranged from a special appearance and ceremonial first pitch thrown out by Vanna White, an incredible post game firework show, an appearance by super-mascot Reggy, and of course top level baseball. This was truly a thrilling event to be a part of, and we look forward to watching the Pelicans in the second half of the season as they pursue the Carolina League crown! As a guest of the Caravelle Resort, we can get you great seats to regular season and playoff action for the Pelicans. Click here to view the Pelicans schedule and to track their run to the playoffs!

It looks like our "secret" seems to be getting out, though at this point it really isn't much of a secret anymore: Myrtle Beach is one of the greatest places to take a vacation! The world's foremost print and online newspaper, the New York Times, released their "Top 31 Places to Go This Summer" and listed Myrtle Beach as the number six on the list. While the article gave top billing to Hard Rock Park, there is no doubt that Myrtle Beach earned the spot because of ALL of the great things to do here and for the great value that we offer for families, couples, golfers....well really, everyone! The introduction of the article notes that there are no destinations on the list outside of North America due to all of the rising costs of travel, whether it be airline tickets or gas for the car. The best part about Myrtle Beach is that the family can hop in the car and arrive for a little beach time that same day. Now this summer, we are offering loads of savings to help beat those high has prices....savings so great that even with higher gas prices you just might be able to take a vacation for less money than last year! Excitement is brewing on the baseball field this week as our hometown Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina University played host to the Conway Regional of the Division 1 College Baseball World Series for the second year in a row, and advanced to this weekend's Super Regional after defeating Columbia University, the University of Alabama and East Carolina University. This achievement marks the first time that the "Chants" have reached the final 16 of NCAA baseball.
We were excited to get in on the action as we hosted the Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team for the weekend. While The Caravelle Resort has long been a supporter of the "Chants" and the CCU athletic program, we have to admit that we found ourselves pulling for our talented guests a little bit. In the end, the Chants pulled out a spectacular come from behind victory over the Crimson Tide in the semi finals.
In 2007, we were fortunate to host the Redmen of St. John's University for the College World Series regional, and in spite of Alabama's loss in the 2008 World Series, we were proud to have hosted such a fine group of student athletes.
In an effort to give back to our community, we have recently jumped aboard a program to assist the Waccamaw Community Foundation (WCF). The program, called "Power In Change" is designed to assist the WCF's Educational Fund, a fund that makes educational initiatives its only priority. Because of the large volume of people that we are fortunate to have stay with us, the WCF created a program where guests could simply put any loose change that might be in their pockets into an envelope and place that envelope into a collection box at the front desk. The concept is that is a power in numbers and that small donations can add up to big change.
