Honeymoon Night

gene dukes • Salisbury, NC

on my honeymoon night on 6/5/1966, I was pulled over by State Trooper between Conway and MB.  my car was plastered in shaving cream with slogan "two going, three coming back".  my wife was so embarrased.

well, anyway, the trooper did not have much mercy on me and gave me a ticket.  honestly, I was doing 60 in 55 and I plead my case and he could see I was on my honeymoon.  my wife was asleep in front seat and was no help.  he charged me $35 which was 1 nights lodging in those days. back then, you had to pay cash!!!

I paid my fine and headed toward MB.  The transaction took about an hour and therefore I pulled in at the Caravelle around midnight.  The night mgr. said he was expecting me earlier.  I told him what had happened.  I checked in and woke up my new wife.  we were unpacking and there was a knock at the door and the night manager was standing there with a bottle of champagne and said "Welcome to the Caravelle"!!!!  I was dumbfounded and appreciative that he would go to all that trouble!  I have never forgotton that kindness.

Thank you, Caravelle!!!!!
