Family Memories

Chris Bales • Smyrna, TN

I explained that I used to have a great time at Myrtle Beach and specifically The Caravelle and this got me curious about what it looked like now so I decided to check you all out, which in turn led to me typing the below memories.

Ny story takes place during the summers of 1987 through 1992.  The Caravelle was a place, and in particular the Sea Mark Tower and Dry Dock, that my family along with 8 other families went to every year.  There were approximately 30 people there each with with 15 adults and the rest being kids from age 2 to 14 when we started going and then we continued going until I was a freshman in college.  This trip was planned by my parents, as well as the rest of the parents and included the men playing golf most of the days while the women were "stuck" with the kids down on the beach.

At the time, when I was approximately 14, and our families began going, we had the old floats  and then later boogie boards, which had the string around the outer edge and by the end of the first day of playing in the ocean with the "girls" who were also on the trip, our chest and arms were rubbed raw.  But this didn't matter, we still went back the next day.  Our group had approximately half the condos in the Dry Dock and this made the pool area feel like our own private pool, and we always had a blast at it.  I also remember the indoor pool area, and how cool we thought that was, except for the one time that my best friend and I were down on the beach when a quick moving thunderstorm came through and if it didn't hit the building housing the pool, it was very close, because it absolutely scared us to death. I also remember, being able to drive my friends car to the beach for the first time, a 1984 Nissan 280Z and thinking how cool we were cruising up and down the strip as well as talking some strangers in to buying us beer to "impress" the girls while sitting on the beach down by the indoor pool as we got older.

I guess what I look back on when I thinkg about the Caravelle, is the fact that I didn't realize the joys of getting together with a large group of friends and having a vacation.  One night during the week, usually on Thursday, the entire group would get together and go out to dinner, usually to either The Outrigger or Drunken Jacks, and eat.  It was usuallly quite the adventure trying to get a reservation for 30+ people, but the fun and fellowship we enjoyed during those years, I will never forget.  I now live in Middle Tennessee and very rarely get to see many of the families which we went to the beach with, but the Caravelle helped provide many memories I will forever look back on fondly.

Thank you, Caravelle, and congratulations on 50 years.
