Memories
Memories from Nearly 30 Years Ago!
Jody Tucker • Salisbury, NC
I have stayed at the Caravelle numerous times. However, I think my first visit was the most memorable. When I was around 11 or 12 my family came to the beach without a reservation.(I am now 40) I vividly remember my family driving from place to place and finding no vacancies. I don't know what my parents were thinking!
After what seemed like an endless time in the car my parents got us a room. It was the last room available at the St.Johns Inn. It was the executive suite. For my sister and I this was the nicest room we had ever seen. We were THRILLED.
Our excitement was cut short as my father realized the garment bag that contained all of his "going out clothes" was not with us. It was at home on the couch. The only clothes he had were his old worn out blue jean shorts and tank he had worn on the trip. To make things a little worse the button fell off the shorts. I remember my mom going to the front desk and getting a needle and thread to sew it back on.
At this time I believe the restaurant at the St. John's was the Prime Rib room. I recall being in the pool and watching the sharp dressed men and the women in evening gowns come by as they made their way to dinner. We stuck out like sore thumbs but my sister and I had the time of our lives. We felt like we were royalty. To this day the mystery of who left the garment bag at home has not been solved but that trip holds some of my fondest memories.
We come to the beach yearly and usually stay at the Caravelle. My children are 11 and 8 months. I hope they too will have some great memories to share with their children.
