Blackmoor Golf Course

Chip and I got to play at Blackmoor with a couple of friends last Sunday and got involved in a heated two man best ball grudge match against each other.  Blackmoor is a great golf course designed by Gary Player that is set in the "low country" of South Carolina, which really just means that it's on the south end of the beach on a great piece of scenic property.  We had a perfect golf day with temperatures in the high 60's, though that it was apparently a little bit too cold for the alligators that are normally out on nice days on the pond that separates the 14th, 15th and 16th holes.  I have seen as many as three gators on that section of the course, but they generally come out when it's about 10-15 degrees warmer.

Now about that match.  Me and my partner Kenny were down by one hole after nine holes and throughout the day neither side was ever ahead by more than one hole.  The match heated up on the 13th hole when we were all square and after taking two shots to get out of the sand, Chip drilled a 15 footer for bogey which matched my three putt bogey.  That one hurt!  Chip was able to match my par on 14 after his partner Doug pulled his tee shot into the famous 18th century cemetery on the left.  He got the standard free drop from the cemetery, but it seemed that he might have been a little shaken from his experience when he hit his next shot into the woods!

Kenny and I finally got our lead on the par three 15th when I made par and Kenny followed up on 16 and 17 with two pars to keep our one hole lead.  At this point we made it very clear to Chip and Doug how pleased we were that we couldn't lose the match, which might have been what caused Chip to spray his tee shot to the trees on the right.  I hit a good tee shot but must have suffered from a little bad karma from my gloating when I hit one down the middle off the tee and followed it with a shank into the trees.  Fortunately Kenny pushed with Doug and we came away victorious on the day.

At the end of the round we all had a great day, and Kenny commented "I could play all day when you have a fun match this competitive on a great golf course like this."  One of my favorite things about Blackmoor is that your score always seems to reflect exactly how you played.  If you don't hit it well then you will find just enough trouble to give you the unwanted bogey or double bogey, but if you do hit it well then you are rewarded with a good score.  As for the final individual scores, I sort of recall Chip having the low round, but who's counting anyway!?
