The National Shag Dance Championships in March 2013

It’s time to slide back on those dancing shoes…The National Shag Dance Championship Finals are back in Myrtle Beach for 2013! They will be held at The Spanish Galleon in North Myrtle Beach on March 7th-9th.

The Grand Strand has a lot to be proud of after last year. Our local winners for 2012, Autumn Jones and Jeff Hargett, are scheduled to be dancing fourth in line within the Pro Division this year. In fact, there will be several shaggers from the area in this season’s contest, which is the 30th Anniversary of the highly anticipated event. For example, in the Senior Division there will be Lyn and Joe Honeycutt of North Myrtle Beach hitting the floor first, Brenda and Bill Barber of Murrells Inlet going sixth, Renee Scott and Jesse Bradshaw of North Myrtle Beach dancing eighth, and Sheila and Bill Seymour of North Myrtle Beach up ninth.

During the 1930’s and 1940’s the Shag hit the scene, and the dance has been here ever since. It got most of its initial recognition at beach parties on the shores of South and North Carolina, and has always been recognized as a lively symbol of natural fun down south. The dance itself is a combination of light, quick footwork, usually over high-tempo rhythm and blues (also known as beach music). In 1984, the Shag was designated the official state dance of South Carolina.

Reserved bleacher seats are only $30, but general admission is $15 on March 7th, $20 on the 8th, and $25 on the 9th.The competition this year is expected to be tough - you won’t want to miss it!
