Located at 10177 North Kings Hwy in Myrtle Beach, The Carolina Improv Company is the first of its kind on the beach. If you don’t know what “improv”is exactly, don’t feel bad – you’re in good company. In fact, when founder Gina Trimarco first started CIC in 2008, she was in for a challenge, since “improv” didn’t even exist on the Grand Strand. The closest I and many other residents had gotten to it was watching that show “Whose Line is it Anyway”, where the audience would pick what the performers acted out or sang (hence the term, which is short for the word “improve”).
This was something that the Grand Strand couldn’t have seen coming. When Gina moved from Chicago to Myrtle Beach, she didn’t even know that she would open CIC…Gina just knew that she needed some refresher training to re-energize herself in a new city, and “improv” was what she needed to get back to her old self again.
The Uptown Theater (named after the famous one in Chicago) was opened in 2009 for shows as well as “improv” classes for anyone who is interested in either making people laugh or learning how to themselves. The company, since its opening just a few years ago, has been awarded the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Business Innovation Award.
The Carolina Improv Company is all about the laughter being the best medicine. This is definitely one of the best places to do just that, and there’s absolutely nothing else like this original, fun-filled place on the beach.
